The one thing worth reading first

None of these tools is a quotation, and none of them replaces a drawing or a design code. They are estimating aids: they turn figures you already know into figures you would otherwise work out on paper, and they show their arithmetic so you can disagree with it. Every sizing rule is stated on the line it produces. Where a number is a starting allowance rather than a calculation — pipe lengths, for instance — the line says so.
